Bombay Velvet Movie Review:
Finally Bombay Velvet comes today. There was a big buzz for the movie and now the film sees the release. Bollywood has made so many period films and this one is among them as well. Let’s see if this movie succeeds in living up to its expectations or not.
Film is set in 60s era (1969 in Bombay). A boxer Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) dreams of becoming a big shot. Kaizaad Khambata (Karan Johar) is a tabloid owner and runs a nightclub ‘Bombay Velvet’. Johnny and Chiman (Satyadeep Misra), his friend, become Kaizaad’s henchmen in his crimes. Jimmy Mistry (Manish) uses Rosie (Anushka Sharma), a Jazz singer to lure Johhny and ultimately spoil his foe Kaizaad. But the two fall in love with each other. What happens afterwards is what forms the rest of the story.
Anurag Kashyup, the director of this film, has made this film lavishly and brilliantly that you cannot take your eyes off the screen for a moment. The era of 60s has been dished out on the screen luminously. Everything seems to be in order presenting you the era of 60s. His proficiency in the art of filmmaking is crystal clear. Anurag is famous for offbeat movies, but this time around he comes up with an altogether glamorous flick to let the people know that he is skilled in all forms of filmmaking.
Story by Anurag Kashyup, Gyan Prakash, Vasan Bala and Megha Ramaswamy is brilliant. The screenplay is crispy and holds value apart from few hiccups. First half of the film is lengthy, but the second half instantly grabs you fully with nail biting moments and climax. Editing is flawless by Thelma Schoonmaker & Prerna Saigal. Cinematography by Ranjeev Ravi is magnum opus – presenting the time of 60s with everything in place accurately is not an easy task, but Ranjeev did it classically. Brownie points for him. Music by Amit Trivedi is catchy and glides on the ears with so much ease. Film works in all departments.
Ranbir Kapoor does a bravura act. You can name his acting – his career best without any doubt. He steals the show all the way. Anushka Sharma is a class to watch. Post PK and NH 10, she shows her class as an actress in this film. Karan Johar makes you say ‘WOW’ with his acting debut in this film. His grey character wins you hearts. Rest of the cast is splendid.
Final Verdict:
On the whole, Bombay Velvet is a visual treat. It is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Watch it for the brilliant acting skills of Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar and most importantly to enjoy the 60s era with so much gloss on screen.
