Finally the wait is over and Gunday hits the screens today. The much-awaited film of the year has come out of the bag for the entertainment of the viewers. Now the question – whether it is entertaining, as the viewers think so or not? Let’s have the answer ahead in the review. Since its release date is 14th February, obviously it has been targeted as a special gift for Valentine’s Day. Gunday surely proves to be an apt gift for this Valentine’s. Backed by the giant banner Yash Raj Films, the film is the directorial venture of Ali Abbas Zafar, who comes up after his last release ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’.

Gunday has every ingredient to lure the viewers – it has action, emotions, romance, masala, friendship and drama. It’s a full packaged movie to entertain the viewers from tip to toe. The big advantage of the film is certainly a solo release. There is no competition in place at all. Even Salman Khan’s Jai Ho cannot come in way to become any hurdle at all, as it has already started showing the windup signs. Last week’s major release ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ too will not emerge a competitor. In short, Gunday has a straight path to move on. Now all depends on film’s strength and good word of mouth publicity to move on with good collections at the box office.

Opening seems to be really great since it is Valentine’s Day today apart from no major competitor in place. Besides, the first weekend too seems to be lucrative for the film’s business.

Gunday is set in 1970s era when Bangladesh was formed. The film talks about two friends – Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) who shit their base to Kolkata (then Calcutta). The story then focuses on their childhood showing them earning their living in a right manner, but destiny has something else in store for these two friends. A theft of coal from a train leads them to become the leading coal mafia in Calcutta. Apparently the two are Gunday, but on the other side of the coin, they also do a lot of charity work such as launching hospitals and schools. Enters ACP Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) into the scene for dealing with and putting an end to their illegal activities in the city. Friendship between the two goes on perfectly well until a cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra) enters into their life. Both lose their hearts to one woman. What happens next is what forms the story…!

Story is really gripping and rich. It allures the hearts and gets the viewer focus on screen right from the opening frame till the climax. Screenplay is brilliantly written though there are few flaws in it such as the childhood saga seems a bit long. Ali Abbas Zafar should be credited for writing this attention-grabbing story. First half is interesting and raises the spirits. Post interval portion carries the twists and turns, which keep the viewer utterly engaged with the proceedings.

The flawless chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor is what makes Gunday catchy.  Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction is top notch. Music by Sohail Sen is soothing and electrifying. Songs have already been working big time on the charts. Tune Mari Entry is the pick of the lot. Editing is fine. Cinematography by Aseem Mishra is first rate. Action by Sham Kaushal is simply fantastic.

Ranveer Singh shows his class in every film he works in. He is a brilliant performer without any doubt. Arjun Kapoor reveals that he will go far long in Bollywood with his strapping acting prowess. Priyanka Chopra looks stylish and gorgeous. On acting scale, she is undoubtedly brilliant all the time. Irrfan Khan is a treat to watch. Rest of the cast too performs well.
