Kaanchi is Subhash Ghai’s outing – Ghai returns to direction after such a long hiatus. His lasty directorial venture was Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Yuvvraaj (2008). These days, a number of film-makers have started making movies on women as the leading protagonists – women centric movies have begun being the center of Bollywood industry nowadays. Most recently, we have watched Gulaab Gang and Queen. Just pour yourself on the recent past of Bollywood industry, you will come across many a movies churned out with women subjects. Gone are the days when only male-centric movies were in demand, time has changed. Today’s audience wants to watch everything, every topic and whatever happens around them.
Kaanchi is the saga of a small town girl who starts a brawl with the powerful people on some of her personal matters. There is no doubt that the subject in interesting though we have watched many a films on these kinds of stories in the past. Subhash Ghai’s effort is brilliant, but he loses the energy halfway and the movie begins turning out to be a mundane fiesta. Ghai is an entertainer – he knows the art of entertaining audiences. He is such a brilliant film-maker Bollywood has ever seen. The showman understands the filmmaking luminously and has vast experience to his credit. Additionally, he has the understanding of music and almost every film of his carries spongy and melodious music to hum it around. But this time, his expertise goes astray and he seems to be lacking in his mastery.
Kaanchi (Mishti) is a small town girl – her life gets disturbed and shaken when the son (Rishabh Sinha) of a politician (Mithun Chakraborty) starts making her life a big hell. She shifts her base to Mumbai and decides to settle the scores with the politician and his son.
The script could have been tighter and crispier. Ghai should have written it with more care by using his expertise and experience. The first half is engaging and develops interest. The twist in the tale is simply awesome. But when you wait to move the story go ahead with this point, nothing of this sort awaits you at all. Post interval portion is lackluster with a number of sub-plots forcefully inserted into the narrative. Subhash Ghai forcefully inserts every available masala ingredient to make the film interesting and entertaining for all and sundry, but this spoils the basic story of the movie. Ghai attracts with direction. On editor’s chair, he fails to register any impacts since a number of unwanted episodes should have been cut off.
Music is melodious, but not a chartbuster as usually Ghai’s movies carried in the past. The big names of music industry have been taken on board – Salim-Sulaiman and Ismail Darbar. Even Ghai himself takes credit on music album also. Nonetheless the music is not what it should have been. Cinematography is first-rate.
Mishti looks gorgeous and acts her part with such finesse that you love watching her on screen. Kartik Aaryan is fine. Rishabh Sinha is good to watch. Mithun Chakraborty is brilliant. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. Mahima Chaudhary does a cameo and enacts well. Rest of the cast does well also.
Final Verdict:
Kaanchi carries an interesting subject, but a number of flaws make it an average fiesta.
