Jal releases after enjoying acclaim at the festivals. The film carries the feel of parallel cinema and appears to be the same as well, but at the same time carries the commercial aspects as well. In short, it is a well-made movie that needs to be watched.
Set in the Ramm of Kutch, Jal is the story of Bakka (Purab Kohli) who likes to discover the water in the desert. Kim (Saidah Jules), who is an animal activist, comes to his village. In order to save the lives of the dying flamingoes, she finds help from Bakka to discover water there. They install a pump to trace the water. The story takes the turns when the scheming Puniya (Mukul Dev) starts hatching the conspiracies to spoil Bakka and his efforts to trace the water.
Girish Malik, the debutante director, shows the human emotions, drama and the serious issue of water in the desert on celluloid with dexterity. The brilliance of the director is that he takes no time to introduce the characters on screen.
There is no vivid novelty in the story at all, but the best thing is that it is interesting and makes you enjoy it on screen. The narrative by Girsih Malik and Rakesh Mishra is well-written though carries few blemishes such as the first hour seems slow. The film turns out to be splendid more with the classy work of the cinematography by Sunita Radia. Editing seems a bit stretched in post interval portion. Music is average.
Purab Kohli is fantastic in his act. He delivers the acting prowess with brilliant dexterity. Tannishtha Chatterjee is fine. Saidah Jules is brilliant. Mukel Dev looks fit to his role. Others too deliver the acts with aplomb.
Final Verdict:
Jal deserves to be watched. With brilliant performances, marvelous direction and great subject, it makes a worthwhile viewing.
